What is this, exactly?
One male fruit fly. Twenty profiles. Absolutely no dating advice. Watch Finn browse three portraits per profile and swipe with his front leg on a tiny phone. His lineup includes fruit flies, a mantis, a cicada, a beetle, and a scorpion who somehow made it onto the app. Only the portrait pixels enter the neural simulation. You can watch the image input, neural activity, and left-or-right output as it runs. The pixel encoder and swipe readout are engineered; the model has not learned attraction or real fruit-fly courtship. Press Play, orbit the 3D scene, or shuffle the lineup. But… why?
I started this for fun: what if a fruit fly had Tinder? That led to a tiny phone, a very strange dating pool, and a neural simulation driving the swipes. Doing it properly would mean studying and modeling what actually attracts fruit flies to each other. I drew the line at researching their love lives. So here we are.
